One woman reflects on her cancer journey

Six days after Tami Houston’s 44th birthday, she found the lump. Less than two weeks later, the test results were in: breast cancer. It was December 23rd. “Dr. Campbell rushed the results for me because she knew I suffer from anxiety,” remembers Tami. “It was better for me to know before the holiday than to wonder the whole time.”

That diagnosis led to a year of treatment for the triple-negative tumor – 16 rounds of chemotherapy, a double mastectomy, 28 rounds of radiation, and reconstruction surgery. “I was in a very, very bad place,” recalls Tami, “and Dr. Campbell made sure I understood just what I was up against. You need to get ready for the fight of your life and she prepared me. This is do or die, literally. She saved my life.”

Despite the grim outlook, Tami’s treatment was a success. Her tumor shrank from 6cm to 6mm in just four treatments and she is now in recovery. Through it all, her best friends, her boyfriend, and the entire staff of the Breast Care Center were there to support her. “They truly care. They will go the extra mile to make you comfortable even though you’re in the worst possible position you can be in.”
